Tamara Fleming

Artist's Statement

Tamara Fleming is a creative powerhouse and co-founder of FEMWORKS, an award-winning marketing communications firm, based in Newark, NJ, that specializes in helping business to engage consumers in multicultural markets. In addition to her work in creative production and the news industry, Tamara Fleming is an accomplished photographer. Tamara is an image contributor for Getty Images, the world’s leading creator and distributor of still imagery, footage, music and other premium content. Her work has also graced the pages of national publications like Essence Magazine and Pregnancy & Newborn. She has a driving passion to create images that positively represent African American, Latino, urban, and lesbian and gay communities. Her deeply intimate photographs affirm that love transcends boundaries.

For the Queer Newark Conference Tamara will present a new collection of portraits that pay homage to the legacy of LGBT activism in Newark. Her collection, a visual chronology of Newark LGBT activism, features trailblazers who have and continue to advocate for Newark’s LGBT community.
