_______________

Library Committee
Committee Chair:  Beryl Satter, satter@andromeda.rutgers.edu

The goals of this committee are:
1)   Locate a permanent library home, ideally in the city of Newark, for all interviews, documents, and artifacts about Queer Newark that are generated by the “Queer Newark:  Our Voices, Our Histories” conference and by the ongoing Queer Newark Oral History Project.
2)   Investigate innovative, cost-effective methods of using faculty and library professionals to train students and interested community members in top-quality archiving, cataloguing, transcription, and digitalization/ web design techniques.  This is necessary in order for our oral histories and related materials, as well as those of Drew University’s project “Mapping Newark” and other similar archives, to be made accessible to as broad a public as possible.
a. For cost-effective archiving and accessibility, we plan to draw upon the model used by Dr. Jacqueline Goldsby’s “Mapping the Stacks” project, which archived and made accessible numerous collections of African-American history in the Chicago area.  See http://mts.lib.uchicago.edu/ for information on “Mapping the Stacks.”

3)   Push for the creation of an Oral History Research Office in Dana Library, Rutgers-Newark, which could potentially oversee the Queer Newark Oral History Project and other oral history projects centered in Newark’s culture and history.
