"At Home in Newark: Stories from the Queer Newark Oral History Project," Opening Reception. Newark Public Library. Doors open at 5pm. Program begins at 6pm. Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender and queer people have made Newark their home for generations. In spite of poverty, violence, illness, racism and discrimination, the LGBT community has thrived.This exhibit, based on interviews from the Queer Newark Oral History Project (queer.newark.rutgers.edu), tells stories of activism, of creative expression in balls, and finding community in traditional churches, new places of worship, bars, nightclubs, and on street corners. Join us and hear the voices of LGBTQ Newark!
