In historical accounts of Newark, sexuality rarely occupies center stage. But in addition to being a city of immigrants, a pioneering site for Black Power politics, and other more recognized aspects of its story, Newark has long been a place where underground sexual communities -- sex workers, gay and lesbian bars, adult theaters, and other venues -- struggled against marginalization and oppression. Rutgers historian Whitney Strub will discuss what attention to this rich layer of Newark's history adds to our collective memory, and point out where it can be researched.
