Transgender Voices

This is a collection of audio clips by members of Newark's transgender community that were used in the exhibit, At Home in Newark: Stories from the Queer Newark Oral History Project, which seeks to go beyond the more well-known LGBTQ histories of the Stonewall Inn or the Castro District of San Francisco to detail how LGBTQ people in Newark historically claimed space for themselves while facing issues such as poverty, violence, illness, racism, and discrimination. The stories you will listen to on this page engage with ideas around art and activism, transition, and queer spaces.

These audio clips were curated for the 2018 Mascara X conference as well as for a pop-up session at the 2019 National Council on Public History (NCPH) conference.
